One of My Favorite Moments During NYFW SS17: Family Dollar + Colgate #FDFabulous
As we enter the final swing of fashion month, I have feelings of relief (because it was an insanely busy time - i.e. lack of blog posts lately), but moreso excitement as I reflect on all the unforgettable events, backstage visits and designer shows I was blessed enough to get the chance to attend this season. What's one particular day that really stood out for me? My fun-filled day around Harlem with Family Dollar & Colgate. Along with a few other amazing bloggers and editors, I had the chance to "live life in the luxe lane" not only learn what these brands have to offer, but I also got to meet some of the really cool people behind all of it. Let just say, "it was definitely a day to remember." Here's why...
We all began our day with by meeting and greeting one another over light bites and breakfast at the Aloft Hotel, and then went straight into things by jetting over to one of Family Dollar's newer stores in the Bronx. We were greeted by staff members, and given a cool mini tour around the store. I'm sure you may have already guessed that most of us made a serious stop once we hit the beauty aisle. I had no idea and couldn't help but swoon over how many namesake hair and beauty brands were stocked on their shelves. Would you believe they had Shea Moisture products, which are already usually pretty budget friendly, priced slightly lower than what you would find in other common drugstores and mass markets? I also noticed other go-to brands like Dove, Caress and L.A. Girl all with just the right price tag to keep you looking and feeling good without breaking your pockets! I mean...who doesn't want that? Another point I want to call out is how many products they had that cater to women of color. From deeper finishing powder shades to curly-girl approved items, more than a few cult classics were most certainly present. Double win!
After making our way around the Bronx store and taking a few fabulous flicks, we headed over to the Harlem Skin & Laser Clinic. It was such a refreshing breath of air to even step foot into this spa like location. Once we were settled, we got right into the swing of things and got a chance to be enlightened by words of inspiration about some of the top beauty and style trends from celebrity makeup artist, AJ Crimson and celebrity stylist, Anastasia Walker. One cool tip I learned from Crimson was how to create your own nail polish. With an easy mix of eye shadow and clear nail polish, guess what? You have created your own custom color. Walker gave us some pointers on how to curate our closets for a winning wardrobe and some of her favorite current trends like bell sleeves. We also had a chance to chit-chat with Colgate's ambassadors, Claire Sulmers, founder of Fashion Bomb Daily. To top this portion of the day off, I was treated to one of the best 10 minute massages ever.
We fully rounded out the day, by having the opportunity to visit Harlem's Fashion Row Pop-Up Shop. HFR is a unique creative platform that highlights as well as celebrates top multicultural industry designers. I have always thought this company was pretty dope as it showcases designers of color who create amazing wearable pieces. It's quite refreshing to say the least! Some of my favorite collections included Sammy B. Designs, Undra Celeste and Ladaska Mechelle. It was a really nice way to conclude the day, and I can't wait to visit again next season.
Overall, I am truly thankful to have gotten the chance to add this experience to my fashion month highlight reel. Family Dollar really seems to show a keen interest in celebrating African-American women and making sure they cater to the beauty and grooming needs specific to us. Plus, those prices aren't anything to sleep on as well. Hello?!
